pickleball swing check/learn/paddle up
The pickleball ready position most players get wrong
Updated October 2026 · 2-minute read
Many players drop their paddle, stand straight, or are flat-footed. The correct ready position has your paddle up and out front, knees bent, and weight on the balls of your feet. This puts you in a strong, balanced spot for any shot.
How to tell
- Your paddle is below your waist.
- You stand tall, not bent.
- You feel slow to react to shots.
- You often get caught flat-footed.
Why it matters
A good ready position helps you react faster to any ball. It gives you balance and power for your next shot. You'll move quicker, cover more court, and hit better.
The fix
- Paddle Up. Hold your paddle out front, chest high. Keep it ready for volleys and dinks.
- Knees Bent. Bend your knees slightly. Stay athletic, like you're about to jump or sprint.
- Weight Forward. Lean slightly forward. Keep your weight on the balls of your feet, not your heels.
One cue makes it click: Paddle up, knees bent, ready to pounce!
