How to reset a pickleball and kill the speed-up
Updated October 2026 · 2-minute read
To reset a speed-up, get low, use soft hands (3/10), and keep your paddle out front. Absorb the pace and float the ball gently into the kitchen. This kills their speed and gives you time.
How to tell
- Balls fly long.
- You hit pop-ups.
- Can't slow the ball down.
- Feel rushed at the net.
Why it matters
Resetting speed-ups takes away your opponent's power. It buys you time to get back in position. This puts the rally back on your terms, not theirs.
The fix
- Get Low. Bend your knees. Stay ready and balanced for the incoming speed.
- Soft Hands. Grip paddle lightly (3/10). Let the ball sink into your paddle face.
- Absorb & Float. Paddle out front. Absorb pace, then gently float the ball into the kitchen.
One cue makes it click: Soft hands, low body, float it in.
2-minute drill
Practice this drill at home or against a wall to build muscle memory.
- Stand low. Extend paddle out. Practice absorbing a pretend ball with soft hands.
- Against a wall, stand close. Gently block the ball back with soft hands.
- With a partner, have them soft toss. Practice floating it back into the kitchen.
