Is your pickleball serve legal? The 2026 serve rules
Updated October 2026 · 2-minute read
For 2026, your pickleball serve is legal if you contact the ball below your waist with an upward motion and your paddle head below your wrist. The alternative is the drop serve, where you simply drop the ball and hit it after one bounce.
How to tell
- Opponents question your serve.
- You hit the ball high on your paddle.
- Your serve feels very flat and fast.
- Referees make calls against you.
Why it matters
An illegal serve is a fault, costing you the point. Knowing the rules ensures fair play and prevents unnecessary errors. This keeps the game moving and your points counting.
The fix
- Standard Serve. Contact the ball below your waist. Your paddle head must be below your wrist.
- Upward Motion. Your paddle must move upward when you hit the ball. No downward chop.
- Drop Serve. Simply drop the ball. Let it bounce once, then hit it. No other rules.
One cue makes it click: Waist low, paddle up, or just drop it.
2-minute drill
Practice your serve motion at home to build muscle memory.
- Stand in front of a mirror.
- Practice your standard serve motion slowly, checking waist and paddle.
- Practice dropping the ball and swinging after the bounce.
