pickleball swing check/learn/powerful serve
How to add power to your pickleball serve
Updated October 2026 · 2-minute read
To add power to your pickleball serve, make a fuller shoulder turn and step into the shot. Keep your arm relaxed, then accelerate it through contact out front.
How to tell
- Serves land short.
- Opponents easily return.
- Arm feels stiff after serving.
- You don't step forward.
Why it matters
A full shoulder turn and stepping in create momentum. This lets your relaxed arm whip through the ball faster. More speed means more power and depth on your serve.
The fix
- Turn Shoulders. Rotate your shoulders fully back during your backswing. Face the side fence.
- Step In. As you swing forward, step with your front foot toward the net. Shift your weight.
- Whip Arm. Keep your arm loose. Accelerate it fast through the ball, extending out front.
One cue makes it click: Turn, step, whip: Serve with your whole body.
2-minute drill
Practice this sequence at home without a ball.
- Stand sideways, turn shoulders back fully.
- Step forward with your front foot as you swing.
- Finish with your arm extended out front.
