pickleball swing check/learn/third shot pop-ups
Why does my third shot drop keep popping up?
Updated October 2026 · 2-minute read
Your third shot drop pops up because you're likely gripping too tight and punching the ball. The fix is to soften your grip and lift the ball with a slow, low-to-high arc, using your legs for power instead of your arm.
How to tell
- Ball lands near opponent's feet.
- Opponents attack your drop easily.
- Your shot has too much pace.
- You feel like you're hitting down.
Why it matters
A soft, low third shot drop forces opponents to hit up, giving you time to get to the net. This puts you in an attacking position. It stops them from hitting down on you.
The fix
- Relax Grip. Hold paddle loosely, like a handshake. No squeezing.
- Bend Legs. Get low. Load your legs for the lift. Stay balanced.
- Slow Lift. Swing low to high. Scoop the ball gently, don't punch it.
One cue makes it click: Lift it with your legs, not your arm.
2-minute drill
Practice this motion at home or against a wall.
- Stand facing a wall or mirror. Bend knees slightly.
- Hold paddle loose. Swing slowly, low-to-high, imagining a scoop.
- If with a ball, gently push it up the wall, focusing on the arc.
