pickleball swing check/learn/third shot choice

Third shot drop vs drive: which should you hit?

Updated August 2026 · 2-minute read

Which to hit? Drive a high, short return. Drop a low, deep one. When in doubt or pushed back, default to the drop.

How to tell

Why it matters

Choosing the right third shot helps you get to the net. It puts pressure on opponents. This gives you a better chance to win the point.

The fix

  1. High Return. Is the ball high and short? Drive it hard and low.
  2. Low Return. Is the ball low and deep? Drop it softly into the kitchen.
  3. When in Doubt. If you are pushed back or unsure, default to the drop shot.

One cue makes it click: High ball, drive. Low ball, drop. When in doubt, drop.

2-minute drill

Practice visualizing the return and choosing your shot.
